Great Overall Experience

Fund: SmartForest Ventures

Posted by PlanB on 2008-03-18

PUBLIC:

I suggest you take the gripes of non-funded companies with a grain of salt. We had a long-term relationship with SFV. Our experience:

Pitch: SFV engaged to understand our business and gave helpful feedback. We had other VCs who stopped picking up the phone when they lost interest. When SFV initially turned us down they not only called, they explained why.

Financing: in multiple rounds, we found SFV terms to be consistently reasonable and market-rate. Even in a down round and a tough market, we never felt taken advantage of.

Execution: SFV made a long-term commitment to our company, both financially and with board time. On the board they represented all shareholders and not just their own interests.

Summary: SFV really cares about Portland and about helping entrepreneurs, not just about returns. I can't stress how important it is to find a VC you can trust. (See "Financing" and "Execution", above!)

Not So Fast....

Fund: SmartForest Ventures

Posted by vc_bucks_suck on 2007-08-09

PUBLIC:

SmartForest is a small fund with limited bandwidth, and they are a VC - so they have all of that baggage.

But they mean well. Hugh is very smart and detail oriented. He can be trusted, which is important when dealing with VC money and the inherent mercenary aspect of the business.

Dumb forest

Fund: SmartForest Ventures

Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-26

PUBLIC:

Anyone arrogant enough to call themselves "Smart" probably isn't. Might as well name a venture fund "Honest Bucks" or "Trustworthy Capital". Sure enough, there is nothing "smart" about this firm... look at their dismal record of write-offs, land-of-the-living-dead companies, and horrifically bad IRR. Coleman has left a trail of destruction behind her everywhere she has been since arriving in Oregon after her right-time-at-the-right-place career at Apple.

Playing at the Wrong Game

Fund: SmartForest Ventures

Posted by slingsandarrows on 2008-01-15

PUBLIC:

Despite their bad reputation, we pitched to them. Hugh actually fell asleep during the presentation! They never got back to us, but we figured they passed. We got money (thankfully!) by much better VC firms.
I've been told don't ever get them on your board. They make a spectacle of board meetings, fight amongst themselves, and micromanage to the Nth degree.

Anon May 26 is Right

PUBLIC:

Debi Coleman is avoided at all costs in PDX, the only place where an image of success long, long ago and far, far away still sells. In small towns, politeness and public restraint extend even to crude personalities. In private, however, Anon May 26 said it all.
