Mission Ventures Leads in San Diego
Fund: Mission Ventures

We recently completed a competitive Series B financing with Mission as the lead. In my view, the firm has cemented itself as the leading San Diego fund and a premier Southern California investor. In contrast with some of the comments here, Mission will be aggressive and market competitive where it is motivated by a business model and dealing with established entrepreneurs. Very straightforward and communicative from first meeting through the process - no surprises and a lot of collegiality. I would recommend including Mission on your short list, especially if you are a Southern California company.
The fund did not solicit my comment.

I keep hearing that these guys are weak on technology domain knowledge. Simple things like "what is RSS" and "what is mozilla" ... is this a firm in business purely because of its geographic location? appreciate your thoughts.

Jeff is a great guy - smart, lots of energy, insightful, polite. He heads up Mission’s LA office, based in Santa Monica, and tends to look at deals in tech and digital media. Mission has been good with feedback on deals. I received a formal email pdf letter from the San Diego office on a deal they passed on. I like the fact that they actually tell you they are passing vs. other firms that give you the long maybe, which means no. I highly recommend working with Jeff.

Pitched this firm before. Ryan & Alexander gave great feed back and were constructive. If your a tech start-up in SoCal they are worth calling on. Returned follow up calls even though they passed. Not many firms do that.

Seem like nice enough guys, but are looking for established models with key customers in order to get involved.
