Layoffs Are Coming To Venture Capital Soon

TheFunded.com Advice

Posted by fnazeeri on 2009-01-04

Tags: Venture Business Crisis

PUBLIC:

I just got off the phone with a friend who is founder/CEO of an early stage medical device company. His company is doing well and recently received a couple of term sheets for his first institutional round. As he was going through the process of negotiating with the potential investors, he said they were trying to set his expectations low. He told me a story about how one investor recounted tales of startups making mass layoffs, cutting back everywhere and generally dire conditions (basically sending the message that he should be happy to be getting an offer).

So my friend responded, "Wow, that sounds terrible. This must be really affecting you badly...how many people have you had to layoff here""

The VC stared at him with a bewildered look.

Jim Smith: Professional, Smart Vc, Good Interactions

Fund: MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures

Posted by Anonymous on 2009-01-02

PUBLIC:

Pitched my company to Jim Smith at two stages of financing. He didn't invest, but our discussions were very nice and professional - memorable enough for me to take time out of an extremely busy time to write this post.

Disclaimer: I've founded, built, sold, multiple startups. Met more VCs than I can remember. Have observed MDV as part of one of their earlier investments as well.

The good: Jim is very sharp. Gets it quickly. Let's you make your pitch how you need to. Asks tough questions and they are mostly directly related to the issues you were worried about.

Very polite, easy to deal with, and prompt.

The not-so-good: Jim had suggested slightly traditional solutions to certain issues he raised. Not as entrepreneurial about those solutions as an entrepreneur might be, but then he is a VC. And his suggestions did make us think of more traditional, lower risk ways of doing this, which helped us in the end.

I've met Randy Strahan and Sven, dealt with Jon Feiber as well, and I think each of them was very professional. Good experience, and I would recommend Jim and the MDV team to any entrepreneur.

Large Only

Fund: Austin Ventures

Posted by gsfeab on 2009-01-02

PUBLIC:

After pitching since October - its readily apparent that AV (and many others) are only investing in what is now termed early stage (with trailing revenues of $1-3 Million)...Boys, this isn't early stage. Time to revamp the web site and other materials that only late stage companies matter. With $900M fund wouldn;t you think this is a great time to invest in early stage ventures knowing that they will grow over 5-7 year horizon. The economy will get better by then and these companies will be the ones to shine.

Very Knowledgeable Of Of Early Stage Issues, Very Helpful

Fund: CampVentures

Posted by wences on 2009-01-02

PUBLIC:

We pitched to both Justin & Jerome Camp. After some follow up meetings and due diligence they agreed to co-invest alongside our lead investor. They are very knowledgeable of early stage issues, and they are very helpful with most of those issues. They helped us a lot in our fund raising, providing great introductions to top tier VC firms, always with partners with which they have already worked with in the past. We feel like they are looking after the company's interest as well as the entrepreneur's interest; we would select them again in a heartbeat.
