Mike Kwatinetz and the Azure guys are first rate. Mike K in particular is very bright, pays attention to details is tough but fair. He has been an investor in my company for sometime. He has been very patient and has been real value add. The firm while young has had some tremendous success. I would do another deal with them. Mike K is also the type of investor you would get into a fox hole with because he would have your back. I know that is a rare quality in vc's today.

They Do Their Homework

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by former exec on 2008-02-21

PUBLIC:

Azure was the lead investor in my last company. We met with them for over a year before they made an investment. They were very focused on our execution and really did their homework on the market and opportunity. Once on board they remained active and pushed hard on meeting plan. They are extremely supportive of the teams that they back and perhaps to a fault, are hesitant to make changes.

The guys remained supportive when the seas were choppy and followed their money when "things took longer than we anticipated"

Be prepared for a tough but fair negotiation.

Good Guys

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by ceobythebay on 2007-09-13

PUBLIC:

I sat on a Board of a company that Azure invested in. I had the chance to work with Mike Kwatinetz and Ray Carey. These are very bright guys. They worked harder on behalf of the company than I've seen any other VC do including a lot of introductions. At times their heavy involvement was to fill needs on the executive team, and while this would annoy any CEO, it was needed here. They supported the company through multiple rounds despite rocky performance. Though it may be hard to win an argument with either one of these guys, they are both good capital partners.

Good Experience

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by mdh on 2007-09-07

PUBLIC:

I am surprised by some of the negative comments and low(ish) rating. Paul Ferris just passed on a deal of mine (FWIW, a very early stage startup).

As I thought about the experience, communications, and reasoning given, I am satisfied that they gave sound, honest feedback of what they liked and didn't.

They understood the technology, value proposition to the customer, and business opportunity it presents.

They didn't waste my time and knew how to say no at the right juncture. I believe they invested a fair amount of time working the opportunity. I was treated very considerately by their support staff, even receiving a call from an assistant when Paul was going to be less than 10 minutes late for a scheduled call!

What more can you ask for!"

Highly Unprofessional

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by reinspruch on 2007-08-12

PUBLIC:

When David Limp says to me "We like to follow Sequioa's model of investing in proven entrepreneurs and/or first-generation Americans", how do you respond" It was indicative of the hair-brained questions we were asked. And it is always troubling to present to a firm twice but have your emails go unreturned - not a "yes", "no", "maybe", or even "you're an idiot". To the entrepreneur off the street they are very unprofessional but perhaps others have had better experiences.

The Next Big Thing

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by Anonymous on 2012-08-27

PUBLIC:

Azure is the best young firm out there and are every bit as good as the big name VC's. I have worked with dozens of VC firms and these guys are who you want in your corner. The Azure team is professional, helpful, and they give great advice. I have worked closely with Cameron Lester, Dave Limp and Mike Kwatinetz and they are all exceptional.

Azure Goes the Distance for Broad Light

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by avought on 2007-07-02

PUBLIC:

My experience with Azure Capital has been extremely positive. Although I've met a range of guys there, I've mostly dealt with Paul Weinstein and Ray Carey who joined our series C and D rounds in 2004 and 2005. Probably the thing I like most about the Azure team is their analytical, reasoned approach to problem solving. I guess this must come from their background in investment banking at CSFB prior to forming Azure.

One area where they have been of particular help is in recruiting of C-level officers where they provide introductions and assessments, and frankly, help sell our story to candidates. The team also has a lot of domain specific knowledge in the telecommunications patch we work in. Through their network, which includes a large number of LPs from industry we've been able to get key introductions and also calibrate information.

Paul and Ray have really gone the distance - literally - for their investment in my company. We have half our Board meetings in Israel (where R&D is located) and they have not failed to make the long trip there. They are accessible, involved, and connected.

I'm very glad to have Azure Capital Partners on my team.

Chairman Rome Corp.

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by Steve Papermaster on 2007-06-29

PUBLIC:

Azure Capital is a very well run, professional VC firm. The GP's backgrounds as Investment Bankers and Analysts have been augmented with strong levels of operational involvement across their portfolio. I've worked with them for over five years building ROME Corp. together, from concept through high growth. Both Cameron Lester and Mike Kwatinetz are board members, and have added tremendous value to the company.

They have been focused on all the right elements of the business - both at the detail level and at the strategy level. Mike and Cameron both operate at true partners in the business. I've always found them to be two of the highest integrity, professional and decent people I've worked with. They have different talents and strengths and those are complementary. They are willing to take strong, principled stances and may even disagree with each other, but always come together and mutually support any decisions that we make as a board.

Paul Ferris and Paul Weinstein also act as true partners even though they are not directly involved with the company. They are willing to help out with any element of brainstorming, connections, analysis and financial strategy.

The supporting team across the partnership is also a class act and very hard working on behalf of their portfolio companies. Hans Roderich is exceptional in his financial acumen and diligence. Ray, Seann, Martin and David are also very strong with their respective skills.

Having worked with many VC firms at all stages, taken companies public, completed M&A transactions, and been involved with companies that have not succeeded as well, Azure ranks among the best and most professional I've known.

I recommend them most for early stage companies with a long term, large market potential that expect to go through multiple phases of growth - and all of the accompanying challenges.

While any VC firm and their partners may have an occassional bad day or meeting circumstance, serious negative comments about Azure are to me not credible as a general matter. Tough questions and challenges to underlying assumptions and outlooks don't constitute arrogance or disprespect. They are a highly valuable and critical part of building companies and discerning the right courses of action to take - with the associated risks and uncertainties.

In the past I've worked with Cameron Lester and the firm in general. They are one of the more thoughtful in their investments and more involved in their portfolio companies. The management team has extraordinary operating experience and supports it CEOs from a balanced perspective. They were also involved in a recap with us that was not for the faint of heart - and Azure was by our side every step of the way. I would not hesitate to work with them again.

Azure Works for Vapps

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by bhl211 on 2007-05-29

PUBLIC:

I have to disagree with most of the negative comments about this fund. I have been in contact with a number of VC's over my last two companies and the team at Azure (full disclosure, they recently funded us) has been excellent to work with. They took the time to do the research on our business and our market, made the calls to our references and partners, asked all the right questions and when the going got tough, continued to ask the right questions and not get negative.

Furthermore, they have been more than willing to tap into their network to help us advance the goals of the business. High level introductions at major companies has been the result as well as incremental business in the pipeline.

Last, they are not afraid to roll up their sleeves to help us the nuts and bolts of getting an early-stage company to the next level.

Pulled a Deal

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-28

PUBLIC:

I experienced Azure doing something top VC's just don't do often. They went to termsheet very quickly and then pulled the deal when we were pushing them to move. Top firms offered new termsheets in the next 60 days, so the business was not damaged, but this is investment banker behavior not quality venture behavior.

I've had great experience with Azure over the last few years. Cameron Lester is a great partner in building a business -- constructive, value add, excellent connections that the firm is willing to put to work for portfolio companies. A couple of things really set Azure apart as a partner....

Unsure about Azure

Fund: Azure Capital Partners

Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-15

PUBLIC:

I have no I idea why these guys cold-called us for a meeting, acting really interested. It was a total waste of time: they were likely doing market studies for another investment. Don't listen to what they say, but look at their track record -- if you don't fit the profile then don't get lured into a meeting. They're followers, not leaders.
